Portland, Maine - The Portland Pirates fought back from a two-goal deficit but could not hang on in the extra session and lost to the Providence Bruins 4-3 in overtime on Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Former University of Maine Black Bear Peter Ferraro had the game-tying and game-winning goal and chipped in two more assists for the Bruins, the AHLs best team. The Pirates, playing their second straight overtime game gave the Bruins all they could handle.

Providence jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one. Elias Abrahamsson beat goalie Martin Brochu off a feed from Ferraro and Steven King scored his first goal of the year off another Ferraro helper.

The Pirates scored the only goal of the second period off a turnover.  Jake Ficenec, playing in just his second game as a Pirate, stole the puck behind the Bruins net, swung the cage and jammed the puck under goalie Paxton Schafer. It was his second goal in as many games.

The Pirates tied the game on a powerplay in the third period. Jeff Halpern collected the rebound of Ficenecs point shot and wristed the puck over a sprawling Schafer. Five minutes later, the Pirates again pounced on the powerplay. Schafer juggled a shot from the blueline. It popped out to Barrie Moore who tucked it inside the right post.

The Pirates lead lasted until a powerplay late in the period. Ferraro, left uncovered at the left face-off circle, blasted the puck past Brochu at 12:50. Mark Major had a chance to give the Pirates the win when he broke in alone on Schafer but the goalie made a diving save.

In the final minute, Moore had a chance at his second of the game but defenseman Steve Bancroft smothered the one-time shot in his pads.

Moore then hooked down Bancroft giving the Bruins a powerplay that ran into the overtime.

Just as that man-advantage expired in the extra frame, Ferraro pounced on the rebound of a Brandon Smith shot and beat Brochu just under the crossbar at 1:12.

The 4-3 overtime win gives the Bruins a record of 6-1-0-0 against the Pirates this season.
